Screw Series --> download link

Screw Series is a routine to connect two overlapping timbers with an array of screws or lags. This version has choices for not only standard lag sizes, but also LogHogs from Olyfast and RSS screws by GRK. The main beam (where the screw heads reside) is countersunk and piloted, the receiving beam is not drilled.

Fasteners check for and report penetration depth. When minimum penetration cannot be achieved, the graphic will turn red to alert the user. Although the screws are always perpendicular to the first selected ( main ) beam, the array has a full set of parameters to alter other geometry.

These three connections are each done with a single ScrewSeries2 script. The leftmost connection also uses the Overlap script. The rafter is overdone with (4) 1/2" lag screws, the post array demonstrates the use of translation parameters to move the screw lines off of the center of interference of the two beams.
Insertion
  1. Select the beam receiving countersinks and pilots first. The second beam doesn't receive any drills.
  2. The script defaults to the GRK fasteners, and 2" min. penetration.
  3. Alter OPM parameters as needed. There are 2 lines of fasteners with independent controls for rotation, spacing, number of screws, and translation along 2 axes.
  4. If you can't get the arrangement you need with 2 lines, add a second instance of the script
Mods
This script is fairly complex and interrelated, I'm not suggesting any user mods. See something you'd like to change? Need to add a different manufacturer/model?

Caveats
  • The script does a fairly complete check of penetration depth, but it's not perfect. Large arrays and complex geometry can also mean each screw has a different penetration, the script always calculates from the center of the array. Check results carefully in complex connections.
  • The script currently checks to make sure that the countersink is large enough to fit the washer of a standard lag, but you might want it larger, to clear a special driver for instance. Check the countersink diameter against installation conditions/logistics.
  • Olyfast LogHogs are excellent screws, but the model line goes from 5" to 9" in length with no intermediate lengths. This can result in rather long fasteners; a 9" screw where a 6" would have worked if one was available. Be aware that this is a direct result of the product line, not an error in the script.
